Spot price, not a shop price

Australian dealers add a premium over spot, and jewellery carries GST, while investment-grade bullion does not. Use the spot price here as the benchmark and ask any dealer what premium they add over it.

Gold in Australia: what to know

A major gold producer

Australia is one of the largest gold producers in the world, so the local price matters to its mining industry and its currency, which is sometimes called a commodity currency.

Perth Mint

The Perth Mint in Western Australia issues the Gold Kangaroo and Lunar series of coins and sells bars, with its one ounce coins at 99.99 percent gold.

GST on bullion

Gold of 99.5 percent purity or higher in the form of bars and investment coins is GST-free in Australia, while jewellery is not. Check with the Australian Taxation Office or an adviser.

General information, not tax or investment advice. Rules and rates change, so check current rules before you buy or sell.

Frequently asked questions

+How is the gold price in Australia worked out?

It is the international spot price of gold in US dollars, converted into AUD at the latest daily exchange rate, and then divided into grams, kilograms or other units using the troy ounce of 31.1035 grams. The figure at the top of the page updates about every minute while the market is open.

+Is this the price I will pay in a shop in Australia?

No. It is the spot price, the wholesale benchmark. A jeweller or coin dealer adds a premium over spot for fabrication, dealing costs and profit, and tax may apply on top. Always compare a dealer's quote with the spot price shown here to see what premium you are being charged.

+Why does the gold price in AUD move when the dollar price does not?

Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars, so the AUD price is the dollar price times the exchange rate. If the AUD strengthens against the dollar the local price falls even with gold unchanged, and if it weakens the local price rises. The history table on this page shows the local return next to the dollar return so the currency effect is visible.
