Spot price, not a shop price

Canadian dealers add a premium over spot; the premium is usually lowest on Maple Leaf coins and large bars. Use the spot price here as the benchmark and ask any dealer what premium they add over it.

Gold in Canada: what to know

Gold mining country

Canada is a major gold producer and Toronto is home to a large share of the world's mining companies, so gold and the Canadian dollar are often followed together.

Gold Maple Leaf

The Royal Canadian Mint's Gold Maple Leaf, issued since 1979, is a one ounce coin that is now 99.99 percent gold and is sold by dealers worldwide.

GST and HST

Gold bullion of at least 99.5 percent purity is zero-rated for GST and HST in Canada, while jewellery is taxed. Check with the Canada Revenue Agency or an adviser.

General information, not tax or investment advice. Rules and rates change, so check current rules before you buy or sell.

Frequently asked questions

+How is the gold price in Canada worked out?

It is the international spot price of gold in US dollars, converted into CAD at the latest daily exchange rate, and then divided into grams, kilograms or other units using the troy ounce of 31.1035 grams. The figure at the top of the page updates about every minute while the market is open.

+Is this the price I will pay in a shop in Canada?

No. It is the spot price, the wholesale benchmark. A jeweller or coin dealer adds a premium over spot for fabrication, dealing costs and profit, and tax may apply on top. Always compare a dealer's quote with the spot price shown here to see what premium you are being charged.

+Why does the gold price in CAD move when the dollar price does not?

Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars, so the CAD price is the dollar price times the exchange rate. If the CAD strengthens against the dollar the local price falls even with gold unchanged, and if it weakens the local price rises. The history table on this page shows the local return next to the dollar return so the currency effect is visible.
