Spot price, not a shop price

Prices at dealers in Germany, France, Italy and the other euro countries include a dealer premium, and rules on VAT for jewellery differ by country. Use the spot price here as the benchmark and ask any dealer what premium they add over it.

Gold in the euro area: what to know

One price across the euro area

The euro is the currency of the euro area, so the price in euros applies from Germany to Ireland. Gold is also held in large amounts by the European Central Bank and the national central banks of the euro area.

Coins and bars

The Vienna Philharmonic from the Austrian Mint is a one ounce coin of 99.99 percent gold. The Krugerrand and the Maple Leaf are also widely sold in euro countries.

VAT on investment gold

Under European Union VAT rules, investment gold is exempt from VAT, while jewellery is taxed. In Germany, gains on gold held privately for more than a year are generally free of tax. Rules differ between countries and change, so check locally.

General information, not tax or investment advice. Rules and rates change, so check current rules before you buy or sell.

Tools

Frequently asked questions

+How is the gold price in the euro area worked out?

It is the international spot price of gold in US dollars, converted into EUR at the latest daily exchange rate, and then divided into grams, kilograms or other units using the troy ounce of 31.1035 grams. The figure at the top of the page updates about every minute while the market is open.

+Is this the price I will pay in a shop in the euro area?

No. It is the spot price, the wholesale benchmark. A jeweller or coin dealer adds a premium over spot for fabrication, dealing costs and profit, and tax may apply on top. Always compare a dealer's quote with the spot price shown here to see what premium you are being charged.

+Why does the gold price in EUR move when the dollar price does not?

Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars, so the EUR price is the dollar price times the exchange rate. If the EUR strengthens against the dollar the local price falls even with gold unchanged, and if it weakens the local price rises. The history table on this page shows the local return next to the dollar return so the currency effect is visible.
