Spot price, not a shop price
Swiss banks and dealers quote bars and coins at a small premium over spot, and the Swiss franc price moves with the franc as well as with gold. Use the spot price here as the benchmark and ask any dealer what premium they add over it.
Gold in Switzerland: what to know
The refining centre
Swiss refineries process a large share of the world's newly mined and recycled gold into bars, and Zurich and Geneva are major trading and storage centres.
A safe-haven currency
The franc is itself regarded as a safe-haven currency, which is why gold in francs can behave differently from gold in other currencies when markets are under stress.
Vreneli coins
The Swiss 20 franc gold coin, the Vreneli, contains about 5.8 grams of fine gold and is a popular collector and investment coin.

Frequently asked questions
+How is the gold price in Switzerland worked out?
It is the international spot price of gold in US dollars, converted into CHF at the latest daily exchange rate, and then divided into grams, kilograms or other units using the troy ounce of 31.1035 grams. The figure at the top of the page updates about every minute while the market is open.
+Is this the price I will pay in a shop in Switzerland?
No. It is the spot price, the wholesale benchmark. A jeweller or coin dealer adds a premium over spot for fabrication, dealing costs and profit, and tax may apply on top. Always compare a dealer's quote with the spot price shown here to see what premium you are being charged.
+Why does the gold price in CHF move when the dollar price does not?
Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars, so the CHF price is the dollar price times the exchange rate. If the CHF strengthens against the dollar the local price falls even with gold unchanged, and if it weakens the local price rises. The history table on this page shows the local return next to the dollar return so the currency effect is visible.
