Spot price, not a shop price
Dealers in the United States typically charge a premium over spot that is smallest on large bars and largest on small coins. Use the spot price here as the benchmark and ask any dealer what premium they add over it.
Gold in the United States: what to know
Priced in dollars everywhere
Gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce around the world, so this page is the benchmark itself. Every other regional page on this site is this price times an exchange rate.
Popular coins and bars
The American Gold Eagle contains one troy ounce of gold in a 22 karat alloy, and the American Buffalo is one ounce of 24 karat gold. Bars from one gram up to the 400 ounce good delivery bar are traded.
Tax treatment
In the United States the Internal Revenue Service treats physical gold, and most ETFs that hold bullion, as collectibles, with a maximum long-term federal rate of 28 percent. Rules change and depend on circumstances, so check with a tax adviser.
General information, not tax or investment advice. Rules and rates change, so check current rules before you buy or sell.
Tools
Convert any weight or karat with the gold unit converter, work out what a past purchase would be worth in USD with the gold investment calculator, or value old jewellery with the gold scrap value calculator. The full table by karat is on the live gold price page.
Frequently asked questions
+How is the gold price in the United States worked out?
It is the international spot price of gold in US dollars, converted into USD at the latest daily exchange rate, and then divided into grams, kilograms or other units using the troy ounce of 31.1035 grams. The figure at the top of the page updates about every minute while the market is open.
+Is this the price I will pay in a shop in the United States?
No. It is the spot price, the wholesale benchmark. A jeweller or coin dealer adds a premium over spot for fabrication, dealing costs and profit, and tax may apply on top. Always compare a dealer's quote with the spot price shown here to see what premium you are being charged.
+Why does the gold price in USD move when the dollar price does not?
Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars, so the USD price is the dollar price times the exchange rate. If the USD strengthens against the dollar the local price falls even with gold unchanged, and if it weakens the local price rises. The history table on this page shows the local return next to the dollar return so the currency effect is visible.
