Frequently asked questions

+How many grams are in a troy ounce of gold?

A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. It is the standard unit for pricing precious metals and differs from the everyday avoirdupois ounce, which is 28.35 grams.

+How much is a tola of gold?

A tola is a traditional South Asian weight unit equal to 11.66381 grams, roughly 0.375 of a troy ounce. It is commonly used for pricing gold in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

+What does 24K, 22K or 18K mean when converting?

Karat sets the gold purity used in the conversion: 24K is pure gold (priced at the spot price), 22K is 91.67%, 18K is 75%. The converter multiplies the pure-gold value by that fineness before converting units or currency.

+Why does a jeweller quote more than this converter shows?

Because this prices the metal only. A retail quote adds making charges, wastage allowance, the dealer's margin and any local tax, none of which are part of the gold value. Two shops working from the same day's rate can still quote different totals for the same piece.

+What is a pennyweight, and who uses it?

A pennyweight (dwt) is one-twentieth of a troy ounce, about 1.5552 grams. It is still used in parts of the North American jewellery and scrap trade, which is why it sits alongside grams, ounces, kilograms and tolas in the unit list.
