Gold coin prices in the US and Canada rose this week with the metal. Spot gold closed Friday at $4,195.60 an ounce, about C$5,980, on our data, up 1.3% on the week. The cheapest 1 oz American Eagle still cost about $4,360 from an online dealer, roughly 4% over spot.

That weekly gain ended a run of six straight Friday-to-Friday losses on our price data, the longest losing streak since at least the start of 2024. Over those six weeks gold fell almost 10%, from about $4,580 to about $4,140.

What does a 1 oz gold coin cost this week?

An American Gold Eagle cost between about $4,360 and $4,460 on Sunday at US online dealers for buyers paying by bank wire, a premium of 4% to 6.4% over spot, according to the comparison site FindBullionPrices. BullionStar US was cheapest. JM Bullion sat in the middle at about $4,390, and APMEX near the top at about $4,460. Paying by card adds roughly another 4%.

Canadians pay less over spot for their own coin. Gold Stock Canada listed a random-year 1 oz Maple Leaf at about C$6,080 on Sunday, C$100 over its spot price, or under 2%. Investment-grade gold is generally exempt from GST and HST in Canada, Silver Gold Bull notes, so that is close to the full bill.

And a 10 oz bar?

Bars are cheaper per ounce. A 10 oz bar held about $41,960 of gold at Friday's close, or about C$59,790. US dealers asked between about $42,120 and $43,820 for one, a premium of 0.4% to 4.5%. SD Bullion was near the low end at 1.7% and JM Bullion charged 3.1%. That is roughly $18 to $187 an ounce over spot, against about $167 an ounce on the cheapest Eagle.

In Canada, XAU.ca listed a Royal Canadian Mint 10 oz bar at about C$60,610, about 1.4% above our Canadian dollar spot, though it showed as out of stock on Sunday.

What changed for buyers since last week?

Mostly the price. Our previous note for North American buyers worked from about $4,100 midweek; Friday's close was about $90 higher, and gold spent Friday testing the top of its October range near $4,200.

The Canadian dollar barely moved, at about C$1.425 per US dollar both weeks. So Canadian buyers saw the same 1.3% rise, nearly C$80 an ounce on the week at each week's rate.

Rate bets eased. After the University of Michigan's October consumer sentiment index fell to 46.3 on Friday, money markets put about an 81% chance on the Fed holding at 3.75% to 4% this month, FXStreet reported. A December hike is still priced in, which is how the Fed moves gold and why the rally stalled at $4,200.

How does gold compare with stocks this year?

Gold is down about 3% since the start of the year and about 23% below its 29 January record, on our data since 1968. The S&P 500 is up about 14% over the same stretch. For buyers choosing between a coin and a fund, the dealer premium is the main extra cost; we compare the two in gold ETFs versus physical gold.
